Amy Nicholas-Hwang, M.D. is a comprehensive ophthalmologist and a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology who joined the Washington Eye Institute in August 2013. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Her areas of interest include cataract surgery, glaucoma diagnosis and management, and diseases of the ocular surface, including pterygia. Dr. Nicholas-Hwang grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire and was thrilled to move to Washington DC for her undergraduate education at Georgetown University, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Spanish and graduated summa cum laude. She then earned her M.D. degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and graduated summa cum laude. After finishing an internship at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA, she completed a residency in ophthalmology at the Medstar Georgetown University Hospital/Washington Hospital Center program. Dr. Nicholas-Hwang passed the Written Qualifying Exam put out by the American Board of Ophthalmology in the top 99% of all test takers. Dr. Nicholas-Hwang loves teaching the residents at the program where she completed her training, both in the clinic setting and in the operating room. She enjoys providing the highest quality medical and surgical eye care to her patients in the Washington DC and Maryland area. In her free time, she enjoys relaxing with her husband George and their daughter Lucia.
