MICHAEL SUMMERFIELD, M.D
Michael Summerfield M.D. is the founder of the Washington Eye Institute. Dr. Summerfield is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist who had a special interest in cataract and refractive surgery. He has performed thousands of these procedures since graduating from his residency from Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center.
He now teaches his techniques to residents at Georgetown University and Washington Hospital Center where he is the residency program director. He has won several awards including the Joseph Desoff award, and the Simpson award for Ophthalmology research. His most cherished award is the Golden Apple Award which is bestowed by the residents of Georgetown University for excellence in teaching.
Dr. Summerfield is a graduate of Emory University and earned his Medical Degree with honors at University of Maryland.
Dr. Summerfield's interests as an eye surgeon have led him to specialize in cataract and refractive surgery. Dr. Summerfield's approach is to provide each and every patient with individualized and personalized education and care, so that all patients can achieve their vision correction goals.
Patients with cataracts benefit from his expertise in minimally invasive "small incision, no needle, no stitch, no patch" outpatient cataract surgery using only "eyedrop anesthesia". He is committed to assisting patients become independent of eyeglasses, reading glasses and bifocals after cataract surgery through the use of near vision presbyopia correcting lens Implants such as the ReZoom ® Lens Implant, Crystalens® Lens Implant, and the ReSTOR® Lens Implant.
He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
Dr. Summerfield loves his family and spends his time with them when he is not with his patients. He and his wife Yael have two children, Jack and Ava, and a chocolate lab, Abby.
