Dr. Joseph Mekhail is a board-certified ophthalmologist at Washington Eye Institute, seeing patients at the Greenbelt, Rockville, and Cumberland locations. He earned his Bachelor of Science cum laude from Georgetown University — where he studied Biology, Global Health, and Studio Art — before completing his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Mekhail then trained in ophthalmology at the prestigious Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center program and pursued advanced subspecialty fellowship training in cornea and refractive surgery at the University of California's Gavin Herbert Eye Institute. His blend of rigorous surgical training and a genuine passion for individualized patient care defines his approach to every consultation and procedure.

Dr. Mekhail specializes in cataract surgery and the comprehensive management of corneal and ocular surface diseases. His expertise spans a broad range of anterior segment procedures, including laser cataract surgery, premium lens implantation with Light Adjustable Lenses (LAL) and the APTHERA™ IOL, corneal cross-linking for keratoconus, pterygium surgery, and various corneal transplant techniques. He also provides ongoing care for patients with dry eye, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration — combining medical and surgical management to address each condition at every stage.
